One of my favorite Christmas songs, “The Christmas Song,” but I’ve tinkered with one phrase that is a bit outdated.
Written by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé in 1945, it was recorded by Nat King Cole and soon became a classic. This song lends itself to vocal slides, which are fun, but I had to remember that it actually references how HARD it will be for children to sleep, so I tried to whisper all the details there so the babies wouldn’t try to stay awake.
This is the fourth lullaby I’ve recorded. As usual, it’s a raw vocal track using Garageband on my iPad with no outside mic. I say that not to diminish it, but it’s not a fancy production. However, if you like these lullabies, you can still download them and keep them and maybe add music if you like…. but then most lullabies in their natural habitat are sung acapella. So, hopefully this will be something you enjoy.
The first 4 lullabies are free to everyone, but after today, they will all be for paid subscribers. But it’s only $7 for one month, and you get all 31 lullabies, and more music as I record into the new year. But you also get all the benefits of the rest of the substack, The Whimsical Jambearee, if you like, with its paintings, writings, stories, and news of what’s happening to me creatively. If the lullabies prove to be popular, I will get better at recording them, and continue with folk songs or ballads in the new year.
So please consider becoming a paid subscriber and receive all the news about my paintings and music and writing, and many exclusive works you can only read and see here. Thank you for supporting me. You are helping with rent, groceries, paints, etc. It means a lot.
You can cancel at any time. I won’t ask questions or pursue, because everyone is in a different situation and those change. I have supported folks before and then had to pull back because I didn’t have the money. If you have to leave, know that they will be here next time you come back (or if you download them all, they’re yours!)
I hope you find lots here to enjoy!
LYRICS:
"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)"
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed in their warmest clothes
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Will help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
So I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you
So I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you
